Abstract

Rome made up law in Western Europe. The study of legal norms, autonomously from other disciplines, started in Eastern Schools of Berit and Constantinople in the fifth century, and consolidated in Bologna in the eleventh century. Glossators, commentators, humanists, natural-law lawyers, etc. constituted the main schools of legal thought in European history. They made up the legal thinking and notably contributed to the current harmonization of Community law in the European Union.
